New Directions in BSP Computing at Google, Facebook and Huawei
Dr. Bill McColl, Head of Software R&D, Huawei Research Center (France)

when: 16 June 2015, 9:30am
where: room Turing, 7th floor, Paris Descartes University, 45 Rue Des Saints Peres, Paris 75006

Abstract

Prof Leslie Valiant (Harvard) and Prof Bill McColl (Oxford) developed BSP (Bulk Synchronous Parallel) Computing as a new way to design architecture-independent massively parallel algorithms and software. Today, BSP is revolutionizing how parallel computing and big data analytics is done at massive scale at Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Twitter, LinkedIn and many other leading edge web companies. Global software companies are also now exploring BSP in order to reinvent database and data warehouse architectures to handle major new types of massive data sets, such as huge graphs and networks with billions of nodes and trillions of edges. At Huawei Paris we are building the world's leading BSP Research and Development Team, and developing powerful new BSP algorithms and software for super-fast and super-scalable realtime parallel computing and big data analytics. These new algorithms and software systems will drive the design of next-generation systems and platforms for carriers, IT and cloud services.

Short Bio

Bill McColl is Head of Software Research and Development (Algorithms, Parallel Computing, Big Data) at the Huawei Research Center in Paris. At Oxford University he was Professor of Computer Science, Head of the Parallel Computing Research Center, and Chairman of the Computer Science Faculty. He has led research, product, and business teams in Oxford and Silicon Valley in the areas of data science, big data, algorithm design, scalable parallel systems, realtime analytics, and cloud computing.
